Bladder Infections

Bladder infections in dogs are common and occurs when bacteria enters the bladder through the urethra. Although the urine inside the bladder is sterile, the bacteria that gets inside the bladder reproduces and creates a urinary tract infection (UTI). Some dogs may even develop crystals within the bladder. These crystals can form into bladder stones. There are several different types of microscopic crystals that can form but the most popular is struvite crystals. Some crystals can be sharp and cut up the inside of the bladder and urethra causing your dog to bleed when urinating. Needless to say, a bladder infection is painful and often causes abdominal discomfort.
